SHELL
BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 25 (29, 31, 35, 37, 41) sts. Knit 2 rows.
Change to larger needles. Work in Random Ridges pattern for 2 in. [5 cm], end
with a WS row.
Shape waist
Next Row (RS)
K1, k2tog, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 23 (27, 29, 33,
35, 39) sts. Continue in pattern until piece measures 12 in. [30.5 cm] from beg,
end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS) K into front and back of first st, work to last st, k into
front and back of last st – 25 (29, 31, 35, 37, 41) sts. Continue in pattern
until piece measures 13 in. [33 cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Armhole
Bind off 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 3) sts at the beg of next 2 rows – 21 (25, 25, 39,
31, 35) sts.
Dec 1 st each side every RS row 1 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4) times – 19 (21, 21, 23, 25,
27) sts. Work even until piece measures 20 (20½, 21, 21½, 22, 22½) in. [51
(52, 53.5, 54.5, 56, 57) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Shoulders
Bind off 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) sts at the beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 2 (3, 3,
3, 4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place rem 9 sts on holder for back neck.
FRONT
With smaller needles, cast on 25 (29, 31, 35, 37, 41) sts. Work as for Back
until piece measures 18 (18½, 19, 19½, 20, 20½) in. [45.5 (47, 48.5, 49.5,
51, 52) cm] from beg, end with a WS row – 19 (21, 21, 23, 25, 27) sts.
Shape Neck
Work 12 (13, 13, 14, 15, 16) sts, place last 5 sts onto a holder for front
neck, join a 2
nd ball of yarn and work to end of row. Working both
sides at once with separate balls of yarn, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge –
5 (6, 6, 7, 8, 9) sts rem for each shoulder. Work even until Front measures same
length as Back to shoulder shaping. Shape shoulders as for Back.
FINISHING
Sew shoulder and side seams.
TURTLENECK
From RS, with circular needle, k 9 sts from back neck st holder, pick up and
k 1 st at shoulder seam, pick up and k 5 sts along Front neck edge, k 5 sts from
Front neck st holder, pick up and k 5 sts along remaining Front neck edge, pick
up and k 1 st at shoulder seam – 26 sts. Place marker and join, being careful
not to twist sts. Knit every round until turtleneck measures 10 in. [25 cm].
Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.
